Monolith Battle 1

table

Monolith activation

First a target point is attached to the player. this is later used to tell the boss where to shot at. I use a target point because if I use player as the target. The boss shoots at where the player was and not where the player is.

Then the boss becomes activated after a delay to make sure that all the attachments have taken effect before animations start up. Then a target point is attached to the bosses head and forearms those target points are the location where the boss fires from. then a dynamic trigger volume attaches to the forearm of the boss this is used to deal damage to the player.

table

Monolith Damage

when the dynamic trigger volume touches the player it causes damage to the player. this is the best trick for creating the illusion of the boss being more then game breakable actors.

Boss Entrance Animation

This plays the boss entrance animation shown in the video above. All the animations were done using the unreal matinée editor. when the animation ends it opens and enables a gate to allow the player to damage the boss. It also allows the boss to play through its attack cycles.

Attack Animations

The switch going through the animation sets. We wanted to make the bosses attacks cycle keeping true to classic games that we grew up on. we wanted the players to learn the pattern and how to avoid attacks. Notice how the completed nodes to the animation go back into the gate and not the switch that was done so that when the boss is destroyed the gate will close and thus the animation would stop.

table

Boss Destruction

If the hand gets destroyed the gate would open that would enable left forearm weapon. That only happens if the hand is destroyed before the forearm. If the shoulder goes before the hand or the forearm, then that will also destroy the forearm and hand. Creating a chain of explosions. when the left forearm gets destroyed it closes the boss alive gate and plays the boss exit animation.

Monolith 1 death animation

During this animation I really wanted the player to get the full effect so I enable cinematic mode and god mode because I wanted to stop the players from avoiding monoliths laser beams that I set up with the dummy weapon fire and the target points I set up earlier. The laser beams knock back the player out of the frame creating a very cool exit.
